Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
Copperfield College’s Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Program aims for every student to bring to school a parent or student-owned digital device to use as a powerful learning tool.
Students need to be prepared for the ever-increasing use of digital technologies in our society. Daily effective use of devices helps students develop knowledge and skills to become creators and controllers of digital technology beyond being mere consumers. A device is therefore regarded as a vital tool for learning. Students without a device are not able to access everything they need for learning.

The College’s BYOD Portal can facilitate the parent/carer purchase of a device and includes Windows laptops. The Portal provides cash, card and one year interest-free purchase options for different models.
The recommended device requirements for a student laptop for Victorian Government colleges (Grades 7-12) should meet the following general specifications:
Hardware Recommendation
- Processor: Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 equivalent (or better).
- For basic tasks like document editing and browsing, an i3 processor may suffice but isn’t future-proof.
- Memory (RAM): 8GB minimum.
- 4GB is insufficient for multitasking and modern applications.
- Storage:
- 256GB SSD or more(for fast boot times and performance).
- Screen: 12″ or larger screen with a resolution of 1920×1080 (Full HD).
- A larger screen may benefit design and multimedia tasks, but portability is crucial.
- Battery Life: 6-8 hours minimum.
- Ensure enough battery for a full school day without charging.
- Weight: Lightweight, ideally under 1.5kg for easy portability.
Operating System
- Windows 11 Pro(preferred for compatibility with education software).
- macOS Monterey or newer(if choosing an Apple device).
Wireless Connectivity
- Support for Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac)or Wi-Fi 6.
- Bluetooth 4.2 or later for accessory connections.
Input/Output Ports
- At least 2 USB ports(USB-A and/or USB-C).
- Headphone jack.
- HDMI port(optional but useful for presentations).
Camera & Microphone
- Integrated HD webcamand microphone (important for virtual classes and assignments).
Other Recommendations
- Durability: Ruggedized or with a protective case for younger students.
- Warranty: Minimum 1-year warranty with accidental damage protection recommended.
- Keyboard: Comfortable keyboard for typing (preferably backlit).
- Anti-Virus Software: Pre-installed or compatible with required software.
All student use of devices must be smart, safe and responsible. Students must develop not only relevant knowledge and skill of how devices can be used effectively, but also an understanding and a capacity to behave appropriately when using technology.
BYOD Guide
The BYOD Guide contains a Responsible Use Agreement that students and/or their parents/carers must sign before any device is connected to the school network. Parents/Carers of students who do not currently own a device are encouraged to read the specifications for suitable devices prior to purchase.
The College is looking forward to all students using their device in a smart, safe and responsible way. If you have any questions about the BYOD Program, please contact your Campus Office who will direct you through to someone who can help you.
